The Media in Education Trust
The Media in Education Trust (MiET) was established as an independent organisation in Durban, South Africa, in April 1996, and is governed by a Board of Trustees. MiET has a core staff of more than 70 people, and rural development teams with childcare coordinators, school-based carers and Resources and Information Network (RAIN) contractors. In line with MiET’s mission statement, MiET works with rural communities in several provinces in South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, North West, Eastern Cape), and in several countries in the rest of Africa (Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Ghana, Ethiopia).
- Purpose
- MiET's purpose is to promote the development of rural children and school communities by resourcing and supporting rural education, health and socio-economic development.
- Mission
- MiET aims to resource and support rural education, health and socio-economic development.
- Vision
- MiET Africa will be a recognized leader within South Africa and the African context in rural education development.
We believe in the following:
- Addressing the unequal access to resources and opportunities in South African society and, in particular, supporting severely under-resourced and disadvantaged rural areas;
- Involving all stakeholders in the education of children and in rural development, and supporting an integrated and multi-sectoral approach;
- Local ownership, direction and drive are essential for the success and sustainability of any rural development initiative;
- Bringing schools and communities together to address the barriers to children's learning.
