Madariaga European Foundation

The Madariaga European Foundation is a young, independent Non-Governmental Organisation dedicated to the promotion of the European civil society co-operation model as a source of inspiration for progress and development in regions inside and outside Europe's borders, as well as supporting the College of Europe in its mission of education and training.

The Madariaga European Foundation was established in 1998 as an initiative of the former students of the College of Europe to translate on a practical level the College's capacity for insightful reflection on, and analysis of, European integration.

The Foundation is presided by Javier Solana and bears the name of the founder of the College of Europe: Spanish writer, historian, philosopher and politician Salvador de Madariaga (1886-1978).

Madariaga presided over the Cultural Commission of the Congress of The Hague in 1948, from which the idea of a truly European educational institution emerged. This project resulted in the creation of the College of Europe in 1949.

The Madariaga European Foundation works to develop a portfolio of innovative projects on the role of civil society around three major axes: conflict prevention, health, and research. The Civil Society and Conflict Prevention programme includes the Anna Lindh Programme, the New Eurasia Foundation and the Israel-Palestinian Dialogue. The Civil Society and Health programme encompasses the Center for Health, Ethics & Society, the European Dementia Consensus Network and the Fight against Ship-source pollution project. The Civil Society and Research programme includes the EU-US Perspectives on Futures of Science and Technology and the ICT for capacity-building: towards inclusive knowledge societies.

The Foundation develops its projects in partnership with other foundations, think tanks, corporations, national and international organisations and academia.
