European Public Health Alliance
The European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) is the largest European network of the not-for-profit non-governmental community in public health. EPHA represents around 100 member organisations, which include 35 pan European or international networks, working in the support of health in Europe. EPHA membership includes health professionals, disease specific groups, organisations working on determinants such as alcohol, tobacco, mental and reproductive health, consumer and patient groups, complementary and alternative medicine organisations, academic faculties and health promotion agencies. EPHA has members in most member states of the European Union (EU), some countries member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), in Switzerland and in other neighbouring countries.
EPHA aims to improve the health of people living in Europe and to increase opportunities for their participation in decision-making related to their health.
EPHA, an efficient bridge-builder
In its more than 10 years of operation, EPHA has shown its particular ability to serve as a bridge-builder. Hence, EPHA has:
- fostered the creation and development of many new networks and NGOs in health;
- raised the profile of health among Members of the European Parliament and European Commission officials;
- campaigned for increased priority and resources for public health at EU level.
The efficacy of EPHA comes through its operation as a group, through the strength of its values and the clarity of its recommendations.
- EPHA is a platform which provides a strong voice for the health civil society organizations and a mediator between different interests in society for the pursuit of health.
- EPHA promotes the full participation by citizens and advocates on behalf of vulnerable population.
- EPHA creates opportunities (events, workshops, conferences) for health non governmental organisations (NGOs) to set up partnerships and develop joint positions.
- EPHA enables local and national NGOs to engage with the EU by providing them with information on the EU institutions and their decision-making processes, by mobilizing and supporting them.
- EPHA engages in dialogue with EU officials and Members of the European Parliament to outline the links between public health and other policies (such as environment, agricultural, educational, research, development, trade, transport, etc).
