Raymond Georis
Chair of the Board
Raymond Georis assumed in July 2004 his position as Managing Director of the Madariaga European Foundation (Brussels, Belgium), after retiring from his position as Managing Director of the Network of European Foundations for Innovative Cooperation. For 23 years, from 1973-95, Mr Georis served as Secretary-General of the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) in Amsterdam. ECF is an independent foundation that promotes cultural participation and cooperation in Europe and beyond.
Mr Georis is Vice-Chairman of the European Citizen Action Service (ECAS), an independent organization working to empower civil society with the European Union by providing advice on how to lobby, fundraise, and defend European citizenship rights. He is also Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the East-West Parliamentary Practice Project (EWPPP), founded in 1990 with the aim of providing support for parliaments in the newly emerging democracies in Central Europe and the former Soviet Union.
The European Mercator Fund launched a prize in Mr Georis' name, the "Raymond Georis Prize for Innovative Philanthropy". The award will go to a project, foundation, organization or individual that has made an innovative contribution to European philanthropy. It is given each year at the European Foundation Centre's General Assembly.
